Last Friday I got a job offer for full time work. This last 18 month or so poker has become really hard for me and maybe others to deal with? I’m ready for a change and would sooner not hang around spending my own money on the cost of living waiting for some kind of legalisation in the American market which will probably only sustain online poker for a few more years. Fact of the matter is we live off other peoples disposable income. First thing that started to nail a lid on this coffin was the UIGEA, then the final enforcement of this act. Not long after an almost global recession started which led to high commodities and RPI increasing which inevitably means this disposable income that we are all trying to win becomes less and less.
I’d been looking for work since mid October last year. In December I’d been talking with a friend I met during the Full Tilt Poker Million Pound Challenge late 2008 and he was kind enough to offer me a place to stay for free and a job in Singapore. I was due to fly out to Singapore before the end of this month. I was really not to excited about telling him I was staying here to work, but deep down I was hoping to get a decent job as I know another venture like Singapore could ultimately be a bit like poker has been for me. Fun, lots of freedom and a chance to bank some more cash. Thing is I’ll be 31 years of age come April and a career path is much more valuable to me. If I lose another 3-5 years of my life when I should be concentrating on a good career path and future business plans this will make creating a decent career path harder at a later date.
I’m lucky because I got this job which has great career prospects, good money and it’s a job I will enjoy doing. The job is basically working in a private boarding school for young boys who get referred from local authorities. These young boys all have emotional and social difficulties so the job will be pretty challenging at times. I travelled over Christmas and had to come home earlier than planned due to them calling me back for a 2nd interview. I’m a pretty confident person and I feel I always excel if given a job interview. I was confident I’d get this job so it shouldn’t have boosted my ego but it has. So many people applied for this position and so many people got interviewed. I spent ages creating and updating my C.V and I actually look pretty dam good on paper even if I do say so myself and also I think it’s a testament to my good character that I got this position.
I will still play poker but not at a professional level. Over Christmas I’ve played that many MTT’s I think the best plan for me is to just play free rolls and use that money to slowly grind into a bankroll.
Just for fun here is a list of previous poker room screen names I’ve ran over the years.(My initial and current PartyPoker screen names and PokerStars screen name withheld.)
